Ever see the movie Calendar Girls? What would happen if someone were to apply that concept to a cemetery? The 2005 Cemetery Illusions Calendar from Oakwood Cemetery attempts to answer that question. This risquee calendar depicts the Troy socialites who are apparently nude. Don't let appearances decieve! It's called "Cemetery Illusions" for a reason.
Why on earth did we do something like this calendar?
Oakwood Cemetery is a "rural" cemetery in historic Troy, located in upstate New York. We are one of the largest "rural" cemeteries in the country and 157 years old, with hundreds of acres, miles of roads, five major buildings, and about 60,000 burials. We need to raise funds because trying to maintain all this history is expensive.
Were we worried that we would offend?
Yes. That is exactly why the title is "Cemetery Illusions." Any "shockingness" is in one's mind only. Our models are wearing as much as you might see on any beach in the country. Our props create an "illusion" of what you think you are seeing. Because we are a cemetery, we had to be dignified. (Well, we'll admit one person is not an "illusion" . . . can you guess which month that is?)
