Research

Major General John Ellis Wool Oakwood welcomes your research questions. We wish we could answer your genealogy and other research questions online, but regret that we can not. We have hundreds of acres, miles of roads, 5 buildings, and about 60,000 burials, but have only enough money for 2 year-round permanent employees. Except for our seasonal mowers, the two must do all the burials, cremations, snow plowing, accounting, equipment repair, etc. During the winter we may also have 1 or 2 hourly workers to help. One of the two is our Administrator, who is the only person in the office; but he is often out on the grounds.

Add to that the fact that our records are not computerized. They are all handwritten, many 150 years old, in poor condition, and stored in our vault. Searches often involve looking in several sets of volumes, and then searching on the hand-drawn section maps, most of which are in extremely fragile condition.

Thus we beg your forbearance and ask that you send your request to us in writing, to

Our Administrator WILL respond, but it might take one-four months for him to do so. He will most probably send you a copy of the plot plan showing the name you are seeking, with the location of the gravesite within that family plot, along with the names of everyone buried there.

When you have received that, if you decide that you want additional information such as date of death, place of birth, etc., please send a check for $10 per name. That requires separate searches in a different set of hand-written volumes. We have looked into computerizing the records, but the last cost we knew of was about $60,000 - $70,000, which is outside of the realm of possibility for us.

If it is an early burial, (prior to 1930) you might also try a search on the web, for the Mormons microfilmed some of our early records (from 1850 to about 1935) a few decades ago.

We are most grateful for your patience and understanding, and look forward to hearing from you via snail mail.
