William Henry Van Schaick

As the captain of a New York-based steamboat, "the General Slocum," Captain Van Schaick was tried and convicted for the NY area's worst disaster in terms of loss of life until the September 11 attacks. It is the worst maritime disaster NYC’s history, and the second worst maritime disaster on US waterways. Vindicated of all charges, he was interred in an unmarked grave, which was marked years later.
